Exercise SNOW EAGLE 2011

Applications are invited from eligible cadets who wish to take part in Exercise Snow Eagle, taking place in the Oberstdorf area of the Allgau Region of Southern Germany and Austria during the period 25 Mar 10 - 3 Apr 11 inclusive.

Eligibility. To be eligible for Exercise Snow Eagle, cadets must:

  1. Be 16 years old or over on first day of course.
  2. Be medically and physically fit.
  3. Hold current European Passport.
  4. Hold a current European Health Insurance Card.
The emphasis is for complete beginners. Experienced cadets may apply, but priority is given to novices.

The aim of the course is to present cadets with a challenging and exciting pursuit and allow them to develop personal attributes, team working abilities and interpersonal skills. They will have a basic practical introduction to sub-zero conditions and learn basic emergency winter survival techniques, including the construction of an emergency snow shelter and snow craft skills. They will also receive instruction on winter mountain hazards including some knowledge of avalanche prediction and avoidance, safety guidelines and rescue procedures.

Travel to and from Germany will be by coach. Rail tickets may be requested from WHQ to the meeting point at RAF Northolt. Participants are expected to arrive at RAF Northolt the Friday afternoon of 26 Mar 10 and will arrive back after 1700hrs on Sun 4 Apr 10.

Accommodation in Oberstdorf is in twin bedded rooms in the Hotel Traube. Breakfast, a packed lunch and evening meal will be provided as part of the package, but arrangements for food and drink on the outward and return journey is the responsibility of the individual. This should be taken in to account when deciding upon a personal budget for the trip as motorway cafes can be expensive.

Expenses. A personal contribution of £325 is payable by cadets. The cheque should be enclosed with the application form and made payable to "ATC GPF". The contribution covers:

  1. All ski lift tickets for 6 days skiing
  2. Course certificates.
  3. 7 nights full board accommodation.
  4. Ski instruction for 6 complete days.
  5. Additional winter sports insurance and medical expenses premium.
  6. All ski equipment and clothing.
  7. Coach travel from and to RAF Uxbridge/Oberstdof.

In addition a contribution of €25 will be collected from cadets upon arrival in Oberstdof to cover group incidental expenses. Cadets should also take enough money to cover their own incidental expenses, ie for snacks, drinks and presents, plus funding to allow them to purchase meals/drinks during the coach journey.

Applicants are to complete the attached forms and return them, together with their personal contribution cheques, to the Squadron admin office by Sunday 16 Jan 2011.

December Highlights

As we march in to the festive season, a couple of special events are being organised:

Wednesday 8 December - Laser Quest and Bowling Night

Normal parade times, but meeting at Coventry Ten-Pin on the Walsgrave Triangle for two hours of 'Sector 7' laser games and a round of bowling. The cost of the night is being subsidised by the Civilian Committee, but we need everyone to bring £5 ASAP to the Squadron to secure your place.

Sunday 19 December: Christmas Quiz and Lunch Social

Where would be without the boss's famous End-of-Year quiz?! This year we're inviting parents along too to form a team to rival the cadet and staff teams. The quiz is to be held at The Royal British Legion Club in Baginton (Kimberley Road, CV8 3AQ), starting at normal parade time of 1000hrs but running until the slightly later time of 1300hrs. Drinks will be available from the Legion bar, but lunch will we a buffet with platters provided by each family. Who brings what will be decided by the cadets (so parents please let your cadets know if there is anything in particular you'd like to contribute).

The quiz marks our last official 'parade' of 2010 and we will meet back on Wed 5 January at the normal time of 1900hrs. Keep an eye on the website during the break in case any last-minute flying or gliding opportunities spring up (like they did last year)!

Well done to all who took time out of the cold weekend to help raise money at the annual Sainsbury's bagpack.

Official figure to be confirmed but looking a good result considering we were several weeks before the mad-dash pre christmas shoppers hit... so well done.

Special thanks to all the staff, civilian committee and volunteers who helped organise and co-ordinate the shifts.

Here's to more fundraising opportunities in 2011!

Wing Field Day Results

The Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing Field Day was held at Gamecock Barracks, Bramcote, on Sunday 13 June. All the squadrons of the wing were competing, in the presence of AOC 22 (Training) Group, Air Vice-Marshal Mark Green RAF.

The squadron managed 'third' places in both the Senior Modeling and Diorama competitions. Cdt Coles's entry was a model of a De Havilland 'Mosquito' B Mk IV, painted in the colours of 627 Sqn. The diorama, which had to based on the theme 'The RAF in the Central and East Region', represented two of the world's most famous flying units - both of which have been based at RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire - 617 (The Dambusters) Sqn, and The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team (The Red Arrows). Teams were also entered for the Aircraft Recognition and First Aid competitions.

The Drill Team came in at a very respectable 6th place, lead by CWO Dalton who achieved 4th Place in the NCOs competition.

The big surprise came during the Final Parade and presentations, when it was announced that 84 Squadron had achieved 'Best Academic Squadron' in the Wing.

On behalf of the Cadets, I'd like to thank the staff for all the effort that has been put in to the training programme this year. And on behalf of the staff, our congratulations to the cadets on their results.

Transport from the Squadron will be provided, but cadets should arrange to be picked-up from the sports centre at 1330hrs. You will, obviously, need to bring swimming trunks/suit and towel.
