Annual Camps 2014

Its that time of year when we get details of the upcoming camp allocations for 2014 and the year ahead looks to be a bumper year with plenty on offer across the UK and overseas.

Bidding letters have been issued and will need to be returned before the end of the year. We understand that it may be difficult to plan so far ahead but please do make bids as accurately as possible and we ask that you let us know as soon as possible should you availability change.

UK Camps
Eligibility for UK camps: Any enrolled Cadet (no age requirement)

Please note there will be no week camp at HMS Bristol in 2014. There will be 2 weekend camps (4 - 6 July & 31 Oct - 2 Nov), details of which will be issued separately.
There will also be a Wing Fieldcraft Camp at Sennybridge 2-9 Aug.

S1. RAF Shawbury: 30 cadets (m/f split TBC) across the Wing

Home of the Defence Helicopter Flying School serving all three military services, RAF Shawbury is one of our closest stations based in Shropshire. The Central Flying School (Helicopter) and The Central Air Traffic Control School ensure this camp is a dynamic and exciting place for cadets to visit.

Located near to Huntingdon Cambridgshire, RAF Wyton is home to the Headquarters Joint Forces Intelligence Group, the Defence Geospatial Intelligence Fusion Centre as well as No 5 Air Experience Flight.

S3. RAF Linton-on-Ouse: 22 Cadet places (m/f split TBC)
One of the busiest airfields in the country, RAF Linton-On-Ouse, trains the future fast jet pilots of both the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy with the Tucano T1. Based on the outskirts of York, the station provides flying, operational and support wings to prepare individuals for their future careers and wider commitments.

S4. RAF Halton: 38 male and 15 female places across the WingPart of No 22 (Training) Group, RAF Halton hosts the Directorate of Recruitment and Initial Training where all new recruits to the Airforce as well as many civilian roles are trained to the highest possible standard.

A1. RAF Boulmer: 22 cadets (m/f split TBC) across the Wing
Based in Alnwick, Northumberland, RAF Boulmer is the home of Air Surveillance and Control System Force & the RAF School of Aerospace Battle Management. Also based here is A Flight 202 Squadron Search & Rescue who are ready to scramble in support of military or civilian personel in distress at sea or on land.

Overseas Camps 
Central & East Region has offered the following camps to Warwickshire & Birmingham Wing. Please ask in the office for more details including projected costs and requirements.

Spring: Ascension Island 
Wed 26 March - Tues 1 April 2014
Age requirement: 17yrs or over AND must have attended at least one UK Camp previously.
A visit to this important staging post for military personnel travelling to the Falkland Islands and St Helena. The programme is to include instructional visits to learn how RAF Staging Posts are managed, resources & operated; Adventure Training and Support for the local community including any 'Hearts & Minds' activities.

Summer: Gibraltar
5 - 12 Aug 2014
Eligibility: 15 years minimum on date of departure AND must have attended at least one UK Camp previously
The primary role of the RAF stationed on the Rock of Gibraltar is to manage the airfield and provide support to aircraft transiting through this forward operating base.

Autumn: Cyprus
16-25 October 2014 (check half term dates)
Eligibility: 15 years minimum on date of departure AND must have attended at least one UK Camp previously
Cyprus is a highly important Permanent Joint Operating Base with RAF Akrotiri supporting operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. It also provides warm weather training for Fast Jet Operations including the training ground for the Red Arrows.

December Training Programme

The final few sessions of the year and as ever some exciting events coming up:
  • Flight Path Protection Team Visit - Re scheduled from November, the team from Birmingham Airport will visit the squadron to present their work and demonstrate a different element of the aviation world
  • Wed 11 December - the last Royal Aeronautical Engineering Society (RAes) lecture of the season. Entitled 'The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight', speaker Squadron Leader Duncan Mason, Officer Commanding BBMF, promises to be a fantastic end to the 2013 season of lectures.
  • Christmas Social - Sunday 15 December at the Squadron. Cadets can enjoy a relaxed party parade with food and fun before the last push for Bagpack weekend. The Fundraising Social event at Baginton British Legion has been post-poned until January. More details will follow in due course.

  • Squadron Bagpack Weekend - Sat 21 & Sun 22 December at Sainsbury's Kenilworth. This important annual fundraiser brings in all the funds to support our squadron over the following year. Cadets MUST sign up for at least one shift over the weekend - details in the Squadron.

November Training Programme

Firstly, congratulations on successful Remembrance and Armistice parades in Baginton, Coventry and Bedworth. Feedback from the local residents in Baginton praised the large turn-out and high standard of the cadets on parade.

Activities coming up for the remainder of this month:

  • Junior NCO Course at RAF Cosford - two selected cadets will attend this highly subscribed course to develop their leadership skills
  • Flight Path Protection Team Visit - the team from Birmingham Airport Flight Protection Team will be presenting to the cadets about their work at the airport highlighting a different aspect of the aviation world
  • Sat 23 Nov - Kingsbury Long Range Day
  • Sat 30 Nov - 3 x Gliding Induction Slots at RAF Little Rissington (afternoon session)
  • Sat 30 Nov - Cosford 25m Range Day

Remembrance Day Parades - 10 November 2013

ALL cadets and staff are to attend this COMPULSORY parade. Absences will only be authorised if given in writing by parents.

Memorial
The Squadron will be participating in two parades this Sunday. The majority of the Squadron will be taking part in the local service in Baginton village, but as there isn't enough room in the church for the whole squadron and the parishoners, a smaller contingent will join other local units for the civic parade in Coventry's War Memorial Park.

Who's parading where was decided on Wednesday night. (If you didn't volunteer for Coventry, then parade at Baginton!)

Timings for the two parades are slightly different:

BAGINTON - Everyone to be IN the squadron at 0915hrs. We shall finish back at the Sqn at 1230hrs (normal time). Parents are welcome to attend the church service at Baginton, but as parking is limited at the church cars should be left at the Squadron.

COVENTRY - Mustering on Spencer Avenue (near Spencer Park), to arrive between 0930hrs and 0945hrs. You will be aware that road closures are in place for the parade, so routes to the muster point may be convoluted, and busy with other parents! The parade is expected to finish and disperse by 1200hrs.

DRESS: Uniform is No2 (Wedgewood blue shirt, tie and jersey) for cadets, No1's for uniformed staff. WEAR WARM BASE LAYERS! Everyone is to bring their own poppy and church offering (fresh poppies are available at Sqn HQ).

Training Programme

Wednesday 04 September AND Wednesday 11 September:
Uniform: No.3 (DPMs)  - with green belts (no stable belts) as we will be doing Marksmanship Training and/or DofE sessions

Gliding has been cancelled on Saturday 7 September due to staff shortages at the Gliding School.
Wing Swimming is still on in the afternoon - see post below.

Sunday 08 September: The Sheepdog trials activity has been cancelled for cadets so instead we will run a sport session within the normal Sunday parade times.
Uniform: Sports Kit. Bring water bottle.

Wing Swimming Championships

Saturday 7 September at Stechford Cascades, Station Road, Stechford, Birmingham, B33 8QN

Competitor Age Groups are as follows:
Juniors: under 16 yrs of age on 31 December 2013
Seniors: 16yrs of age and over on 31 December 2013


Events held on the day are:
Butterfly
Back Stroke
Breast Stroke
Freestyle
Individual Medley (1 length of each stroke)
Freestyle Relay (4 x 1 length)

Cadets can enter up to 3 events each (one of which must be the relay) and can enter the Individual Medley as an additional event.

Transport will be provided departing SHQ at 1500hrs and returning to unit at approx 2100hrs

Police Call Centre Training Visit: For those selected to attend (you know who you are) arrive at Sqn HQ for 1830hrs in No 2 (Wedgewoods) with ties. You will return to the unit at approx 2000hrs in time for CO's inspection

All other cadets - Uniform is No 2 (Wedgewoods) - Drill and inspection.

Summer 2013 Training Programme

Welcome to the summer, let's hope it plays nicely! The new style (don't be alarmed!) training programme has now been published, covering the end of July and all of August. You can download it in PDF here.

Points to Note

  • New times for Wednesday Parades - Hut opens from 1900hrs, Parade begins at 1915hrs.
  • Remember to submit Absence Forms for all periods you are on holiday over the summer.

Special Events this Summer

  • 24 Jul - Summer Camp Brief - for all those attending their first camp we are holding briefing for cadets and parents to attend to find out what to take, what activities are happening, what is expected of you and to answer any questions that arise. Starting 2030hrs in the main hall.
  • 28 Jul - Swimming Proficency Tests, for those who don't already hold one. Meeting at the Squadron normal times, then off to the pool at 1200hrs.
  • 3 Aug - Gliding Induction Course, RAF Little Rissington. 3 places only!
  • 14 Aug - Warwickshire Police HQ Visit. 10 cadets will be given the chance to see the force's control room in action
  • 25 Aug - Orienteering at Ryton Pools. In civies, meeting at the site
  • 28 Aug - Summer Social - Ten Pin Bowling. In civies, meeting at Walsgrave.

Get Your Camp On! Extra Places Available NOW for Summer Camps

There are a number of places available on Summer Camps that other Squadrons have been unable to fill. The only requirements for attending are that you must be at least First Class Cadet (which should be everyone by the Presentation Day Parade!), and have an interest in attending a jam-packed, activity filled week away at an active RAF station!

RAF Wittering: 3-10 August

RAF Wittering is near Stamford on the A1, straddling the border between Northamnptonshire and Cambridgeshire. It was the Home of the Harrier Force until the withdrawal of that aircraft from service in December 2010 but still maintains an active airfield in support of other military flying activities.

It is home to a plethora of diverse units, including the Headquarters of the RAF’s expeditionary logistics force and Number 1 Force Protection Wing HQ, RAF Regiment. The Station's roles are "To prepare Force Elements and individuals for operations, support lodger and parented units and provide military airfield services."

RAF Henlow: 17-24 August

RAF Henlow is in Bedfordshire, and sits between Bedford, Luton and Stevenage. It is home to the Joint Arms Control Implementation Group (JACIG); the RAF Police's Tactical Provost Squadron, Force Protection Wing HQ and the Specialist Police Wing; the world-class RAF Centre for Aviation Medicine (RAF CAM); the DE&S; No 1 Military Intelligence Brigade HQ; and finally 616 Volunteer Gliding Squadron. A civilian flying school also operates from the site.

The up-front (and maximum) cost for all of this year's camps is £60, but you can expect a significant portion of that refunded depending on the activities that actually take place during your week. In addition, famillies in receipt of Income Support, Contribution-based Job Seekers Allowance or Family Credit you do not have to pay the food charge at Camps, and so this portion of the camp fee will also be refunded if you wish to claim exemption (see consent form for details).

To bid for a place on one of the above camps, tell us via email or telephone as soon as you can (it's first-come, first-served at Wing). You will then need to download and complete TG Form 21 and TG Form 23 from the Wing web site (Activity is 'Annual Camp', dates and locations as above), and bring them in along with a cheque made payable to "Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing ATC" for £60 ASAP.

Sunday 30 June: Race for Life at Stoneleigh Park

This Sunday, instead of our routine parade at the airport, the whole Squadron will be deploying to Stoneleigh Park to assist with Cancer Research's Race for Life fun run.  84 Sqn has been assisting with the events for 5 years now, when we can be found at the finishing line supporting the competitors as they complete their challenge, handing out well-earned water, medals and goodie-bags.

This year, the a team of girls from the Squadron will be taking part in the 5km Fun Run.  Flying Officer Chapman and Cadet Dhanjal will then go on to complete the 10km run.

Cadets and staff are to get themselves to the main entrance (ignore special event direction signs) for between 0930 and 0945 hrs.  Dress for the support crew is No 3 (CS95 DPMs), whilst the runners will can wear their own sports kit with their specially created t-shirts.  Runners are also to bring DPM trousers, boots and beret to wear after the race.

Those cadets unable to stay for the whole day may be collected from the main entrance at 1300hrs.  Everyone else is encouraged to help see the event through by staying until 1500hrs.  Everyone should bring suntan cream, and either a small packed lunch or money to buy something from the on-site catering wagons.

Annual Dinner and Awards Night

Our Annual Dinner was held at the Holiday Inn (Coventry South) on Friday night, in the presence of Air Marshal Sir Tim Jenner KCB. A full report will follow, but photos of the prizewinners are available for viewing on our Facebook page.

The OC would like to thank the flexibility and patience with the Staff at the Holiday Inn for dealing with the unusual format of a military-style dinner, and in particular Fg Off Chapman for a lot of running around the county all day Friday, and to Mr Walton and Cdt Walton for help with setting-up the room.

Training Programme - Sunday 19 May 13

The planned all-day Provisional Radio Operators Course has had to be postponed due to circumstances beyond the Squadron's control. Instead, a 'normal' parade will apply for the majority, with the following exceptions:

Recruit Flight - Air Museum Visit. You will be meeting AT the Midland Air Museum on Rowley Road. There will be a concessionary entrance charge of £3 - so please bring change. We will then go back to the Squadron by minibus, and you can be collected from our HQ as usual.

Silver DofE Team - Planning Session.. Planning for the expedition to Wales next weekend will take place following the normal parade.

Dress: No 2C (bring coveralls for project work)

Dress: Civies / Sports Kit (there are changing facilities there if required)

We aim to return to unit at approx 1730 -1800hrs - To be confirmed as the day progresses.

Parents are more than welcome to come and watch, cheer and spectate. Please be aware there is a car-park fee (£4 for the day) and there are wardens!

  • Wing Athletics Championships: This is an all-day event that the whole Squadron will be attending. Everyone is expected to participate in at least one event, or come and show their support as a spectator.

  • Wing Banner Drill Competition
  • Midland Air Museum: RTF will visit the MAM as part of their 'History of Flight' studies.
  • Provisional Radio Operators' Course: Another all-day event for those who can stay.
  • Squadron Drill Team Selection: Final selection for the Wing Field Day team.
  • Annual Dinner: A formal dinner celebrating and awarding the acheivements of 2012, and dining-out the senior cadets and staff who have left the Squadron over the last year. Date is to be finalised once guest of honor and venue have been tied-up.

  • RAF Cosford Air Show: The midlands' own airshow, the first time the squadron has been able to attend for many years as it doesn't clash with the Wing Field Day! Cost will be just £5 each, which includes transport and entry.
  • Wing Field Day: The BIG inter-squadron competion of the year. Will all the preparation and training of the last 2 months pay off?
  • Dragon Boat Race: It's war on the water in Warwick, as the local squadrons compete against eachother for honour and glory. Followed by a Barbeque! Cost is £14 for crew, £2 for spectators.
  • Uniform to Work Day: The day before the annual Armed Forces Day is Reserves and Cadets awareness day, when all members of cadet organisations as invited to where their uniforms to work and school, demonstrating to the wider public how diverse membership of the reserve forces is.
  • Wing Shooting Day, RAF Cosford.
  • Cancer Research Race for Life: The whole squadron will be deploying to Stoneleigh Park to help man the finishing lines at this huge fundraising event. The girls will even be taking part!

There will be no training at the Squadron today. WO Parker will be present to finish kitting-out the RTF Cadets who have not been issued full uniform yet, but will turn anyone else away. I apologise for the late call on this, but being 'in the field' in the wilds of Shropshire means Internet access has been hard to find!

Wing Sports Trails

This weekend there are Wing Trails for Hockey (boys & girls) and Junior Boys Football.

When: Sunday 17 February
Where: Wyndley Leisure Centre, Clifton Road, Sutton Coldfield, B73 6EB
Transport: Own

Please wear suitable footwear for an All-Weather pitch. Shin-guards and mouthguards highly recommended. If you have your own stick, please take as there will be a limited supply available

Junior Boys Football
1300-1500hrs
Boys must be 14yrs old and under 16 on the 1 Sep 12 (yes, last year!)
Trails will be on the All-Weather pitch so NO studded boots. Please wear shin-guards.

Weekend Flying and Gliding Shocker

You will all be most (un)surprised to learn that due to snow coverage at RAF Cosford and the lack of clearing facilities, even if the weather turns 8/8th blue skies this weekend, there aren't any clear runways to operate from. Therefore both the Saturday gliding and Sunday AEF slots have been cancelled.

We currently plan to parade as normal on Sunday.


The cadets were determined not to let a little snow and ice stop them from getting into something pointy and shiny with RAF roundels on the side...
