The event was
organised by a combination of Squadrons from South and East Midlands Wing and the
Gliding Centre at Husbands Bosworth. It was designed to allow young people with
an interest in aviation to come along, have a close up look at some aircraft,
try out some activities and meet with a wide range of interesting people.
Stands were scattered around the airfield alongside the cordoned off runway
where throughout the day there were flying displays. As the sun shone bright
various aircraft took off including the UK’s No1 female aerobatics pilot who
tore across the sky in unbelievable twists and turns followed swiftly by a pair
of remote controlled hawks as used by the Red Arrows.
Cadet McGeever takes to the wheel |
The cadets
went off to explore the different interest stands, challenging each with
different activities such as the inflatable climbing tower and slide named ‘Spider
Mountain’ and the hovercraft circuits. Also on offer was a demo of the Land
Rover Defender range both in military and civilian versions. Of course, the
cadets wanted to pose for photos riding on this mean machine!
Cadet Gill gets in to get a better look |
Some cadets
from the other units had camped out in the field adjacent and used the gliding
club’s fantastic overnight facilities. They were on hand throughout the day to
assist with parking, directing visitors on arrival and giving the all important
safety briefing. The Café, BBQ and ice cream van were busy all day, especially with
cold drinks as the weather was scorching hot.
This was the
first event of this kind arranged for cadets, scouts, cubs etc and following
from its success we are hoping to get more involved next year and make this an
annual event not to be missed.
